New Portrait Presentation Method

At the studio, we are pleased to be introducing a new way of presenting images from your portrait sessions!

We are currently learning a new software program that will give us many more tools to help you make selections after the session is complete. It is so exciting what we can do!

After your session, you will make an appointment to come back into the studio for a personal portrait presentation with Jenna or me. Sitting on our comfy sofa, we will show you a slideshow of some of our favorites and then go thru all of your portraits with you! We will be able to organize the images into your favorites, view them in a side by side comparison, and toggle between color, B&W, and sepia. We will be able to quickly show you how an image will looked cropped to a certain proportion. If you are looking for wall portraits, we will be able to layout wall folios with you and show you what they will look like within our molding selection or as a gallery wrap. Plus, if you send us a picture of your wall, then we will be able to show you what your images will look like displayed in your OWN home!

We are excited to transition to this superior way of presenting your images to you! We will be trying our best to make the transition as seamless as possible. Please remember, it will be important to schedule the presentation session when all decision makers can be present, as this will be the time to make your purchasing decisions.

Exciting News!!!

It is 2 days after Christmas and I feel like we are still settling down from all the rush and excitement of the holiday season. Autumn is on school vacation this week and it feels good to take thing a little slower this week for a change.

I feel like I have been straight out since September came around, which is when I last posted on this blog. I had a handful of autumn weddings in September and October. Then in late September, I photographed the two local preschools in our town. The fall was also filled with various family and children portraits, as well as a few senior portraits as well. Then in November, my annual holiday portrait special came around, and I had a HUGE response for this and spent the next month and a half designing Christmas cards, and placing orders for holiday gifts.

It is all wonderful! I feel blessed to have a business that is thriving in an economy that has seen better days. However, as my business has grown, I am realizing, that I can no longer wear all the hats that I am wearing. I am running a small business as well as being a stay at home mom to my two wonderful children. I have always managed to juggle both business ownership and stay at home mom, since I had already established a small photography business, when we had Autumn, 6 years ago. I have been lucky to be able to grow my business slowly, which met the needs of my family. This fall, I really started to feel unbalanced in my life. My business, was becoming busier, and it really became a struggle for me to give adequate attention to all aspects of my life. So, after much thought, discussion, and prayer, I decided to take a huge leap of faith and look for someone to join my team.

Her name is Jenna.

Jenna is a mother of three home schooled children. She lives about 2 miles away from my residential studio. She is a great friend and we have many of the same interests. She is a creative and organized person. Hear that? I said ORGANIZED.

I am really excited, and I think Jenna is too, to see where this all leads. Jenna will be helping to take off a few of the hats that I have been wearing in my business. She will be working in the areas of marketing and sales.

We will be creating a new system for viewing and ordering your portraits, that will help us to serve you better. Customer service has always been a very important part of my business model.

Maybe, as next fall rolls around, I will feel some more balance.

So expect to see her smiling face around here!

Guest Book

This summer I have started creating this really fun guest books for some couples to have at their weddings. Instead of just space or lines for your guests to sign, there are questions for them to answer through out the book of images from their engagement session. This is definitely something that will not get put in a box in the attic never to be seen again, but will be looked at over and over!

I've had alot of fun with some babies recently in the studio!

This little one's Mom made a tutu and headband herself to wear during her session. We added a strand of pearls for the finishing touch.

In the Orchard

I had so much fun photographing this amazing family last weekend. We met up in an apple orchard in the beautiful summer evening light. Mom did a great job of getting everyone dressed and ready, quite a feat when you have seven children!

I love how you can see each girl's personality in this image.

Here are some fun images of the three youngest ones! They loved playing in the orchard. Mom had a few grass stains to get out afterward, but hopefully it was worth it.

Lindsay and Devin had a beautiful spring day for their wedding at Church Landing early this May. The trees were just starting to bed and the sun was warm and inviting.

I love this moment captured of Dad smiling at his little girl before walking her down the aisle.

The guys had this idea to pull their phones out for a picture. Updating facebook statuses maybe?

This cake by Hemlock Confections was stunning! It was so detailed yet came across so simple and clean.

Sand, Sea, and a Senior

I have known Hannah since she was just a little toddler. In fact, she even attended my wedding with her family, all of 10 years ago now. She has grown up to become a beautiful young woman, inside and out, and is excited about heading off to college in just a few short months. We met on a beach on Cape Cod to create some portraits for her senior year of high school. I love the colors she choose to wear, they go just right with the sand and sea landscape.

Sweet little Natalie came to my studio this past weekend. I was so excited when I saw that she was ready to fall asleep at the end of the session on my blue victorian chair. We waited a few minutes and off she went to dreamland. Mom was even able to move her to the little doll bed I found last year and was waiting for just the right baby. So sweet!

We did photograph her while awake too!

Jianna came in last week for her maternity portraits. She is due in only a few weeks! We had alot of fun together. I was never really comfortable in my body when I was expecting, but she made it look easy.

I loved that Brandon was just as excited about the portraits as Jianna. He can not wait to meet his little peanut.

I can you see the hair elastic that is holding her jeans closed? Isn't just amazing how round that belly gets? I love it!

I just returned from a 4 day conference in North Conway for the New Hampshire Professional Photographers Association. It is always a great time of learning and being with other photographers whom I admire and just plain love to be around. I helped out with print committee this year as a print handler, which was fun. I was awarded ribbons for all of the prints I entered into the competition this year. I am especially happy that the image above, entitled "Goldilocks" won a blue ribbon along with a judge's choice award.

Something has been on my heart recently. I became a volunteer for Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep Foundation. This is a organization that offers remembrance photography to parents suffering the loss of a baby through the gift of free professional portraiture. I was recently called upon to photograph my first little angel on my own. I will forever be touched by the precious little angel I was given the honor of photographing that evening. I thank her parents for inviting me into lives and sharing their child with me. I hope that the images I captured of them with their precious child will help them as they heal and honor her memory.

Matilda Jane Trunk Show

So I have been busily working on my new website, yeah! I can't wait to switch over! But I wanted to take a moment to let you know about the matilda jane trunk show that I am having this friday evening at 7:30. The new line, House of Clouds, just was released yesterday and I am dripping with desire for so many of the pieces. I just heard that Punxsutawney Phil just predicted an early spring, so come and revel in the new spring colors!

New Year's Wedding

Colleen and Mike got married at Church Landing in Meredith NH on New Year's Day. What a great day to get married. Their anniversary date is easy to remember, being 1.1.11 and there was such an air of festivity as everyone brought in the New Year together the night before. Church Landing was the perfect spot for them, being so cozy and warm.

Colleen and Mike had a special moment before the wedding, where they saw each other for the first time in the library.

We had just enought snow on the ground to show that it was winter but the day was a balmy 50 degrees, so it was fun to go outside.

Colleen got her girls Uggs as bridesmaids gifts and they all wore them outside for the group portraits. Even Colleen wore hers!

Paper Love

It has been 2 whole months since my last blog post! I was blessed with a very busy holiday season and did not find the time to keep current with blogging. So what was I up to? Well, I had a lot of fun designing holiday cards for so many of my dear clients. Here are some of them. Getting and giving holiday cards is one of the best things during the holiday season. It is a little gift you can give to everyone in your address book.

Priceless Expressions

Mom and Dad usually are expecting that perfect smile from their children for the camera. My aim is to get natural expressions and laughter from them. This may not always be a "picture perfect" smile. Young children can be VERY expressive and capturing all those little moments can be more valuable to parent then a cheesy grin. While I did capture plenty of genuine smiles from these two kiddos, I LOVE some of the other expressions they showed me.

I really liked this angle, of mom and dad in the background watching their little girl explore some leaves.

He was going to be a tiger the next day for Halloween and was roaring at me!

He is a tiger hiding in the grass.

Sometimes it is really nice to have a quiet, simple expression for a portrait.

Season of Love

Lately, I have had several great engagements sessions for couples whose nuptials I will be documenting over the next year.

Lindsay and Devin love spending time in the city of Boston. We found ourselves there on a beautiful fall day Columbus day weekend.

Jason proposed to Lyndsay on a bench overlooking the water in Newburyport, so this adorable little downtown made the perfect location for their engagement session.

Colleen and Mike will have their wedding at Church Landing in Meredith on New Year's day. We did their session in the warmer months at Mike's family's home on the lake.

I went with Amy and Hayden to the stables at the Budweiser plant in Merrimack. I love how the colors of the doors look awesome with Amy's gorgeous locks and went with their fall themed wedding this October.

Melissa and John had a beautiful mid September day for their wedding at Zorvinos last weekend.

They were surrounded by those that loved them.

We played a little boci ball.

Their entrance to the reception set the tone for the evening... FUN!

This is the grandmother of the groom. She kept saying she was so honored to be there. The sweetest lady. Melissa and John will be so happy in many years when they look back at these pictures of her. They will be honored that she was there.

During the ceremony, Melissa and John placed love letters to one another and a bottle of wine in this box. It won't be opened till their 10th anniversary! I love this and wish I had a box like this to open next year on my tenth.

So, I do not photograph a ton of seniors. I enjoy these sessions, but I don't want to get in to cranking them out. I want each session to be unique and be a reflection of the teenager. Victoria and her Mom came to be for her senior portraits because she didn't want to be "leaning up against the same tree as everyone else". We had a great time exploring different areas around town and risked getting poison ivy for a few great locales.

Vows on the Lake

Diann and Jim had perfect weather for their wedding held along the shore of Lake Winnipesaukee at the end of August.

They were surrounded by family and friends and enjoyed a beautiful evening under a tent until after the sunset. The natural lighting under the tent was beautiful.

The bride somehow found time to bake her own wedding cake! It was stunning! It was delicious too, there were a lot of extra pieces so Jessica and I stole a piece for the road, shhhh!

I had so much fun with this family at the beach last weekend. They are from our town and their daughters took dance lessons from the same instructor as my daughter last year.

It is amazing the expressions you get when mommy and daddy tickle each other!

Kendra asked if we could do her senior portraits along the marginal way in Ogunquit. Luckily, I was headed up to Maine the next week, making it an easy side trip. kendra was so fun to work with and didn't mind getting wet and sandy, which happens on the beach! It was fun to find a new location. I loved the rocks covered in bright green seaweed and the shallow tides.

Steph and Seth said their wedding vows atop Loon Mountain this June. They got engaged on top of a ski mountain in Utah, and found it fitting to have their wedding on one in their home New England.

Rainbow Baby Book

So here is a new product that i am offering! It is a Colors of the Rainbow Baby Book! I got the idea from Heather Smith of Smith Photography and Design. She created something similar and I thought it would be a great idea to offer it as a board book that a little one can look at themselves. This is one that I made using images of my daughter for her little brother. On every page spread, she is wearing a different color hat and being a little goofy with a prop of the same color. Super fun to make and as you can see, Liam loves it!

I have been loving my June garden this year. My gardens are full of bloom and life. Plenty of places for little ones to explore. I recently added this adorable rod iron child's bench to my garden. It is the perfect size for one or two tots. Hopefully soon, I will be installing a stepping stone path as well. It is hard to believe this is all covered in snow for many months of the year!

I was so excited to try out my new tutu for little Sophie's 12 month portrait session. I made it myself! No sewing either. I picked up this great idea from Heather Smith of Smith Photography & Design who i saw speak at a conference recently. I love how fluffy it is. I can't wait to make more in different colors and lengths. Endless possibilities.

Mother Earth

I recently went to a day long class with the extremely talented Jennifer Hudson. This image is inspired by her couture gowns she creates for her portraiture using fabric and binder clips. I thought it would be fun to give it a try with my friend Heather who is expecting her second child any day now! I loved the idea of fogging up my lens with my breath to give the image a misty look. I want to try it again in the early morning. I am looking forward to spending a few days with Jennifer this fall learning how to make these awesome gowns and creating some unique portraiture and getting back to creating prints by hand.

New Hampshire Print Competition

I recently returned from a fantastic time at the New Hampshire Professional Photographers Association's annual conference. It was my first time leaving my 1 year old son for overnight and it was 3 nights! He did great and I only had a few tears as he waved goodbye to me.

Above is me and my roomie, Jeni. We stayed up WAY to late every night chatting like we were at a junior high sleepover. Why did I think I would get more sleep then I do at home?

Oh and here I am dressed for the banquet night, which is always themed, and people actually dress up! This year the theme was "howlin' nights", so this is "dark Allison". I wasn't too scary, but it was fun.

The conference includes an excellent print competition, judged by some of the best in the area. I always learn so much by simply watching the print judging. As well, I am inspired to see all the excellent work being done by my fellow New Hampshire photographers.

I am excited to share that all the prints I entered were awarded ribbons for being above average professional images. Thanks to all my clients who provided me with these excellent subjects to photograph and inspire me.

A Woman Wears Many Hats

I just love little babies and hats! Sometimes, you get just a precious few moments before it is ripped off, but hats are really fun to place with at a portrait session. They add just the right amount of personality to an image. They can be classic, fun, or seasonal. here is little 6 month old Caitlin sporting a few of her favorites.

Her little bunny was so cute! I always recommend that parents bring in toys that belong to the child and it is especially great when they are neutral, so they don't distract from the child, but compliment them.

Florida Sand and a Bit of Sun

I headed down to Florida this month to photograph the wedding of my friends Lynn and Eric. Lynn and I have been friends since grade school, and I was thrilled and honored to be able to capture their special day.
If rain on your wedding day is good luck, then Lynn and Eric will have plenty to spare! We spent much of the day wondering if the skies were going to clear up so they would be able to have their ceremony on the sand. It wasn't looking to promising, until 15 minutes before the ceremony, the sun peaked out! The sun shown down on them as it was setting for a beautiful, intimate ceremony and we were able to stay outside to create plenty of fun images of the two of them!

One of their favorite things to do as a couple is crossword puzzles, so I thought this was a fun way to end the evening.

Celebrate Love

Thanks to facebook, I was able to connect with some dear friends of mine that I had lost touch with. In college, I spent a semester in Italy, right before Joe and I got married, and developed many great relationships there. Robyn and Ryan lived with me in a beautiful villa surrounded by vineyards outside of Florence, along with about 40 other students. When I returned home, I lost touch with many of these friends, since they all went back to school in the south, and I returned to New England.
Anyways, Robyn and Ryan wed a few years later and had the opportunity to travel this year, as Ryan is a traveling physical therapist. They have been living in Maine for the past several months and I have been able to reconnect with them. As, their time in New England is coming to a close, they asked me to do some portraits for them. The only other professional portraits they have of themselves was on their wedding day.
So on Valentine's day, we got together to create some portraits I hope they will enjoy. What a great way to spend Valentine's day!

On the Wall

Sometimes it is hard for my clients to visualize what their portraits will look like on their walls. There are several things to consider when ordering a wall portrait... size, tone, material, framing choices, etc. Here are some of my favorite recent wall portraits to give you some ideas.

Above the image of the horse and carriage is a gorgeous 30x60 gallery wrap in a float mount frame. The canvas becomes a natural focal point over the headboards in this couple's guest room. The second portrait is a 24x30 framed canvas that is properly sized on a wall in the couple's dining room.

Above are 2 16x16 gallery wraps that flank a mirror on a long wall in a family's entryway. The sepia toned gallery wraps really pop of chocolate brown wall.

Above is a classic wall folio that includes several images from a beach portrait session. The frame choice works well for the images as well as the colors in the bedroom.

Above is a gallery wrap cluster from a fall portrait of a little miss. The cluster is 9 6x6 wraps. The cluster has a modern feel and the color and sepia images work well together over the dark brown leather sofa. The great thing is, this family can add to the grouping as their family grows.

Marathon Boudoir Weekend

Introducing a new member to our family, my nephew Steven. He was born on January 7th to my brother and sister in law. he was a couple weeks early and tiny like my little peanut Autumn was. Isn't big sister, Relena, the sweetest, holding her new little brother?

The blessings just keep flowing in, early this morning I became a auntie again with the birth of my newest nephew to my husband's brother and sister-in-law. Pictures to follow in the next few weeks, I'm sure.

The Other Side

Sitting here with freezing temps outside has made me think of warmer days...
Our family was added to this year, with the birth of Liam, and I really felt it was important to have a family portrait taken this year. So I called upon the talents of another professional photographer friend of ours. Some asked why I couldn't take the portrait myself? Really.... that would not be possible. Sure, I could find a good location, and gather my husband and two children, but the idea of setting the timer and running back in front of the camera would not work. Especially since, much of portrait photography is knowing WHEN to press the shutter button. it was really neat to be on the other side of the camera for once. It was a good to go thru what my clients have to go thru, getting to the location early in the morning, dressing the kids, secretly praying they coroporate, feeling self conscious about the extra baby weight, etc. In the end, I am thrilled to have the portraits. I won't ever be able to go back to this year of having my 3 year old daugther and infant boy. It is an invalueable gift, that your children and grandchildren will have years down the road, when we are gone from this world. The value far superceeds any concern about not being in a smaller size jean.

There is this beautiful picturesque property near my house that I drive by almost every day and often wonder if I will ever have the opportunity to photograph someone there, so when a friend of mine, who is neighbors to this cow farm asked me to photograph her three children there last week, I was thrilled. Our one goal for this session was to get a good one of her three cute kiddos together, I think we succeeded.

Jianna and i met over in the Manchester Millyard last week with her mom and friend and created some stunning portraits of her to commemorate her senior year in high school. We had alot of fun! Jianna brought a whole waredrobe of clothes to choose from. She definately is not afraid of color! Tropical storms didn't stop Brittney and Jeff from having a fabulous wedding this past weekend. While the ceremony had to be moved from the beach to under the tent where the reception was held, this great couple went with the flow and everyone had a great time!

Her little pooch, decked out for the occasion, walked Brittney down the aisle.

We didn't let the rain stop us when it came time for some great group portraits. Luckily the bridal party had picked up these matching umbrellas the day before. They came in handy!

Julie and Dan got married at the Warren Conference Center in Ashland, MA. We had beautiful weather for their outdoor ceremony and guests enjoyed the evening dancing the night away. The groom loves elephants, so Julie had her cousin's wife, Sarah, a cake baker, make a surprise elephant groom's cake. It was faboulous!

Siblings, Jacklyn, Travis, and Nathan were allot of fun this weekend. We started doing some portraits at their house and ended up in my studio's yard for a few as well. Here they were laughing at Dad tickling Mom.

I love this picture, Nathan's expression is like "Dare me, I'll do it!"

We also were able to use one of the newest additions to my studio garden, my cute little wooden bridge.

9 month Dylan was having a bit of a rough morning when he came over for his portrait last week. He was getting over a cold and not quite feeling himself. I just couldn't help myself, he just looked so cute in the middle of a big yell! I think he was mad that the ball didn't come back quick enough.

As, you can see, the session quickly turned around and we got some great portrait of him at this fun stage in life!

I met Rachael and Dan and their children on the NH seacoast early one morning last weekend. The light is so beautiful in the morning and the tide was way out, turning the sand into a shimmering playground for the kids. We had a lot of fun running around, playing in the mud, and splashing in the ocean.

Kerri and I went over to the Anheuser-Busch facility to create some beautiful portraits for her senior year. I love the courtyard they have with the beautiful red barn doors. These are a great example of color coordination in portraits, even if it happen by chance... i love the way her blue shirt brings out the color of her eyes and contrasts with the rust red door. And I love how her red flats and earrings bring it all together.

Our little guy is about 3 months old now and while learning to balance taking care of two children, a household, and a business has had its challenges, it is worth every second, especially when you get to gaze at those sweet full lips, long eyelashes, and button nose.
I got him to fall asleep in one of my new favorite things, a sweet pea pod handmade by one of my awesome brides. Since I was out in my yard so much this weekend chasing little children around, I thought I would theme my post around garden portraits. Our property is always a work in progress, we have lots of plans for it, but there are already many vignettes in which to create stunning outdoor portraits.

We leave a section of our yard to grow long and wild with a path for children to explore.

A large patch of mowed lawn creates a nice background as well.

A homemade playhouse has a cute little porch to sit on and windows to peek out of.

My old wooden gates are one of my favorite places to visit in my yard.

It creates great texture in the background.

A birdbath in a rose garden is a fun place to throw things into.

My perennial gardens are a great place to explore, find some color, and maybe a bug or two.

Dylan is 6 months old now and came in to play..with his fingers and toes. This age is fun because they are so curious about everything, including themselves. He loves to chew on his fingers since he already got in his 2 bottom teeth! We photographed all his itsy bitty parts for a fun collage that I am sure his Mom will show all his girlfriends.

At the annual NHPPA print competition my four prints entered all won red ribbons and hung in the the print show in North Conway. I also won a red ribbon for a wedding album I entered from Jen and Louis's wedding at the Bedford Village Inn. Thank you to all my clients that I love working for and give me the opportunity to be a part of their lives and create pieces of art.
